What is a bookmark?

A bookmark is simply a thin marker, usually mad out of card stock, designed to keep a reader’s place in a book. Bookmarks date back more than a thousand years and have been made over the years out of leather, wood, paper, metal, silk, fabric, cord/rope, and plastic. In the 1800s, bookmarks were used extensively with Bibles and Prayer Hymnals and were usually made from silk, leather, or varying widths of ribbon. By the end of the 1800s, bookmarks were printed on heavy paper and card stock, which coincided with the wider availability of books in general. Today, bookmarks are commonplace and are used as another form of marketing and advertising not just new books but also other forms of entertainment, products, and services.

Dave likes bookmarks as he is usually reading and doing research in several books at any given time. He would prefer using a proper bookmark to hold a place in a book for quick access to the passage he is reading or the information he is referencing. It is much better than dog-eared pages or leaving books open all over his office.
